Fall 2023
Ceramic Final

Daubigny Garden: Vincent Van Gogh

Time-period: 1890, the Gilded Age

Method: Slab-Slump mold

Impacts:

Van Gogh's art inspired future generations of artists like Pablo Picasso. Overall his influence on people created the image to be considered the archetypical artist.

Reason for picking this piece:

I didn't necessarily only want to do Van Gogh while researching art online, I was drawn to the simpleness of the Daubingny Garden and knew that the result of recreating the piece would turn out great

Challenges:

I could already tell that recreating this piece would be a bit of an issue due to the painting being made of oil paint. Other problems I came across was

-Figuring out how to paint the grass, I did dots instead of streaks and loved how it turned out.

-Handle took some time to stick on well

-Underglaze issue: The underglaze became a problem. While my piece was in greenware, the light green I used ended up being very steaky, so instead of doing the background and design in one period, I had to paint the background light green and place it in the kiln hoping it would fix the issue then do another coat of the light green then move onto the design next class.

Successes:

-The Cup overall was easy to make

-Flowers were easy to paint on

-Creating the colors for the piece was not too challenging
